Job Summary
The employee reports to the Animal Care Operations Manager. Under minimal supervision, he/she will provide skilled care and handling of laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner. Primary working areas include standard housing areas as well as specialized areas including, but not limited to, USDA housing areas, bio-hazardous areas, and animal colonies requiring specialized procedures. Also responsible for limited supervisory duties including direction and oversight of work but excluding discipline. Employee will ensure that the facilities and personnel are in compliance with standards set forth by NIH and USDA as well as the IACUC and Institutional SOP.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Properly evaluating the facts and information relative to the animal care and welfare.
- Ability to accurately and clearly describe and record observations, calculations, and findings.
- Ability to accurately assess the health, behavior, and physical appearance of an animal to obtain accurate research findings.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to multitask in a busy research setting.
- Demonstrate a commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism.
Required Qualifications Education:- High School diploma or GED.
Experience:
- One year of relevant experience.
Certification/Licenses/Registration:- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or eligibility to get the ALAT Certification within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications Certification/Licenses/Registration:- Veterinary Technician California license, Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) AALAS Certifications are preferred.
Essential Job Duties
Key Responsibilities - Provides husbandry to research animals.
- Changes animal caging as scheduled, sanitizing rooms, equipment and hallways.
- Assists investigators and veterinarians in performing routine and specialized procedures.
Key Responsibilities - Administers prescribed medications.
- Maintains accurate animal health records.
- Provides pre- and post- surgical care of animals.
- Conducts daily animal health checks.
Key Responsibilities - Establishes, monitors and maintains supplies and animal inventories.
- Ensures that activities are in compliance with AAALAC standards.
- Orders laboratory supplies and pharmaceuticals.
Key Responsibilities - Assigns work activities of less experienced Lab Animal Technicians.
- May lead or guide the work of student employees.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
