THE POSITION
This position is responsible for providing support for the City's computers and users. Incumbents will determine user needs, install, maintain, operate, and configure computer hardware and software, and provide a variety of technical duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
At the level I position: This is the entry-level class in the Information Technology Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Information Technology Technician II by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series, including participating in routine computer support activities, such as less complex troubleshooting and hardware installation. The Technician I will have limited network administration rights. Since this class is typically used for training, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
At the level II position: This is the full journey level class within the Information Technology Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Information / Technology Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, including network administration rights, installing new computers and software, and troubleshooting computer problems. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance when new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the work unit's operating procedures and policies. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the "I" level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience.
The eligibility list established by this recruitment may be utilized by various departments as vacancies occur. There is a current opportunity within the Santa Barbara Police Department. Please note that positions at the Police Department are subject to a thorough background investigation.
CURRENT VACANCY WITH THE SANTA BARBARA POLICE DEPARTMENT
This position is responsible for supporting the Police Department's computers and users. Incumbents will determine user needs, install, maintain, operate, and configure computer hardware and software, and provide a variety of technical duties as required.
Essential functions in the position at the Police Department include:
- Serves on the Versadex RMS sustainment committee and provides continuous updates, training, and innovative solutions.
- Report and track crime and other Police Department-related statistics,
- Maintain and support various databases and software programs.
- Coordinate among a variety of law enforcement agencies in the area, providing technical assistance with assigned software systems
- Perform technical and administrative support of data processing, researching and examining crime data, and all other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Information Technology Technician I Experience: Some personal computer experience including working with a variety of software programs.
Education and/or Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in computer science or a related field.
Information / Technology Technician II In addition to the qualifications for Information / Technology Technician I:
Knowledge of: - Principles and methods of computer configuration and operations.
- Principles and methods of computer networking hardware.
- Principles of data communications standards and implementation.
Ability to: - Perform complex and journey-level computer support activities.
- Troubleshoot hardware and software problems and effect solutions.
- Train computer users.
- Operate a variety of computers, including a variety of software programs.
Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible computer support experience, including installation and maintenance activities and working with a variety of software programs.
Education and/or Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in computer science or a related field.

THESALARY RANGE consists of five steps, each representing an increase of approximately five percent.
STEP INCREASES, through the top salary step, are tied to job performance with annual performance reviews. Employees receive annual performance reviews.

- The City is a member of the Coastal Housing Partnership, which offers home loan assistance and rental reductions.
- A standard 9/80 schedule is observed, with most offices closed every other Friday.
- Flexwork/Telecommuting is available.
- Bilingual pay may be available at a rate of $64 / pay period.
- Vacation is accrued at 96 hours / year, increasing with City service.
- Personal leave (32 hours) is provided each July 1st at the start of the fiscal year (pro-rated the first year).
- Sick leave is accrued at the rate of 96 hours / year.
- Holidays: 12 holidays are observed / year. Paid holiday time is awarded at the employee's applicable schedule, i.e., 9/80, 4/10, etc.
- Retirement: The City does not participate in Social Security.
- PERS Miscellaneous Formula: "Classic" members: 2.7% @ 55; City contributes 12.03% and employee contributes 8% of salary. "New" members: 2% @ 62; City contributes employee 12.03% and employee contributes 7.75% of salary.

- Cafeteria 125 Plan: Employees who opt-out of the group insurance coverage or who select employee only coverage may be eligible for a cash pay-out of up to $362.38 / month.
- Life and AD&D Insurance: City-paid term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment ($50,000 each) are provided.
- Employee Assistance Program: A City-paid EAP is available for employees and members of their household.
- Long-term Disability Insurance is provided.
- State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL) is provided. Employee pays 1.1% of salary. For 2025, the anticipated SDI/PFL rate is 1.2% of salary.
- Deferred Compensation Savings Plans (457) are available to employees through a deferred compensation program.
- Uniforms will be provided by the City to those employees required to wear a uniform.
- Employee must pay an amount equal to 1.45% of salary toward Medicare. An equal amount is paid by the City.
