Basic Functions: The Senate Sergeants at Arms are sworn Peace Officers under PC830.36 of the State Penal Code. The responsibility of the Senate Sergeant at Arms is to ensure the safety and security of Senators, legislative staff, designated foreign delegations, and the public.
Duties: The Senate Sergeant at Arms provides dignitary protection for Senators and staff including investigating and responding to threats, assisting with medical emergencies, and conducting emergency evacuations. The position requires that the Sergeant provide dignitary security for one legislator. The peace officer will provide transportation services within the Central Coast region (Santa Barbara and Ventura counties) and to and from Sacramento, and provide staffing to include but not be limited to the following: meetings, indoor and outdoor events, and community gatherings. This Sergeant will provide regular reports on security matters involving this assignment to the Chief Sergeant and the Secretary of the Senate. Some travel outside the Central Coast may be required as well as working irregular hours including holidays with short notice.
Education and Qualifications: High school diploma is required. Bachelor's Degree is preferred. Please include verification of your degree with your completed application. Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus. Successful completion of a Peace Officer or Law Enforcement Academy is required (Sacramento Police Academy, Special Investigator's Basic Course (SIBC), Sacramento Sherriff's Academy, California Highway Patrol (CHP), etc.). Candidates must possess a valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record; pass a background check and drug and alcohol screening. Ability to stand for extended periods and lift to 55 lbs. Display a high level of integrity, demonstrate reliability, and possess the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Have strong writing and analytical skills and good communication skills with diverse groups of people. Those with prior dignitary protection experience with a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency, and those who have a strong interest in the protection of public officials are strongly encouraged to apply. Must be available to work rotating shifts and extended hours. May be required to travel statewide, or outside the state as necessary on short notice.
Location, Pay Range & Filing Date: This position is located in Santa Barbara, CA. Seniority and significant experience is required to reach the higher end of the salary range. *This position is limited to 960 hours a year. From January through August, with the exception of spring and summer recesses, the work is primarily Thursday through Sunday. Once the legislative session concludes for the year, all days of the week will be covered by the team. Final salary is commensurate with experience and education.
