  • Instruction, administrative, and support services are provided by 211 full-time faculty, 433 adjunct faculty, and 309 full-time staff and management.
  • Santa Barbara City College currently enrolls approximately 13,611 students, the majority of whom are from racially diverse populations as follows: African American/Black - 2.4%; American Indian/Alaskan Native: 0.3%; Asian/Filipino/Pacific Islander- 5.5%; Hispanic/Latinx - 42.4%; two or more races - 6.1%; Unknown - 2.6%; and White: 40.2%.
  • 47% of SBCC's students are under age 19, 28.2% are between the ages 20 and 24, 16.3% are between the ages of 25 and 39, and 8.5% are 40 or older.

Basic Functions

Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor, perform routine custodial duties to maintain assigned College

buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition during an assigned shift.

Representative Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Perform routine custodial duties to maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition; sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets; spot mop spills.
  • Clean classrooms, lounges, offices, hallways and other facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture, equipment and woodwork; empty waste receptacles; collect recyclables; remove debris and graffiti as needed; clean chalkboards, whiteboards, chalk trays and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners.
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper, seat covers and other items; clean mirrors, tile, walls, doors and windows; unclog drains and toilets.
  • Pick up paper and other debris from floors, campus grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to campus facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to campus buildings.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment as needed; set-up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment for special events and activities as assigned; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events.
  • Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and blowers.
  • Lock and unlock doors, gates and windows as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines.
  • Perform a variety of routine general maintenance and repairs as assigned; report need for maintenance and repairs to appropriate authority.
  • Report safety, sanitary, security and fire hazards to appropriate personnel.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities.

Understanding of and sensitivity to meeting the needs of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic background of the student, community, and employee population.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiar with night operations
  • Familiar with safety and emergency protocols
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning duties and cleaning equipment
WORKING HOURS:

Monday-Thursday 8pm-4:30am, Friday 3:30pm-11:30pm
Hours may vary. 12 months per year, plus fringe benefits; 6 month probation period depending on employee classification. All work schedules and work assignments are subject to change based on the needs of the college.
SALARY INFORMATION:
The current salary range for the Custodian position is Salary Table 29, Range 15, $45,816 - $51,813. Nine step salary range continues to a maximum of $55,830. Graveyard shift subject to 7.5% differential. Initial placement based on experience with annual advancement to the next higher step.
Knowledge and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work.
  • Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Requirements of maintaining College buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
ABILITY TO:
  • Perform routine custodial duties to maintain assigned College buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition during an assigned shift.
  • Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
