Brief Summary Of Job Duties

Monitors/operates all equipment and accesses all resources within the Dispatch Center. The majority of each shift is at the console monitoring radios and alarms, dispatching personnel, answering phones, and using specialized software (including CLETS, alarm software, and 911/telephone software) in addition to standard Windows-based programs. This position may also involve releasing emergency messages and communications to the UCSB community during emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Emergency Calls: Monitor and respond to 911, Campus Emergency, and Elevator Emergency lines; dispatch appropriate units; communicate with the deaf using TDD; verify location and assess priority of information.
  • Radio Communications & Briefings: Coordinate interagency responses; maintain communication links; broadcast and rebroadcast information; brief the oncoming dispatcher.
  • Log & Record Maintenance: Maintain chronological calls, logs, and Be-On-the-Lookout records; manage keys and departmental information.
  • Public Information: Answer general inquiries and provide procedural information to the public.
  • CLETS/NCIC operator/equipment monitor: Operate CLETS/NCIC; enter inquiries; manage multiple security and alarm systems.
  • Support Services: Provide CSO dispatch support,Lost and Found, Records, and related administrative tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education and experience.
  • 1-3 years of law enforcement agency experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Read, write, speak and understand English fluently.
  • Proficient typing/data entry; familiarity with computer operations; excellent communication and customer service skills; ability to work under stress.
  • Meet all other requirements for public safety dispatcher as established by law and POST.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of IACLEA accreditation process and requirements is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of modern policing issues and practices as applied within the University environment.
  • Prior experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to use vehicles, computer systems and tools used by police agencies.
  • Mandated reporting requirements for Child Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse.
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work in a confined space until relieved and to work rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment psychological evaluation, six-month in-house training, and the POST Dispatcher test.
  • UCSB is a tobacco-free environment.
