The full salary range for this position is $28.88 - $49.76/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the direction of the Production and Events Manager, with additional guidance provided by the Business Officer and the Chair, the Marketing and Communications Manager is primarily responsible for the creative and progressive marketing, social media presence, communications, public relations, and major initiatives for the Department of Music. Is also responsible for adhering to an annual publicity budget, the design and maintenance of the department's website, and negotiating contracts and royalties for licensed materials used for publicity purposes. The department produces approximately 150 events each academic year, including large and small audience lectures, concerts, recitals, and masterclasses.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Solid knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, strategies and best practices.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards / procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-3 years Experience in Marketing & Digital Communications
  • Solid knowledge of institutional products and services.
  • Organizational skills and skills in file creation, maintenance and management.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time

40% Marketing, Publicity and Public Relations

MARKETING: In consultation with the Chair, Business Officer, Production & Event Manager, and departmental faculty members, develops creative, progressive, and cost-effective marketing strategies to refine and broaden the local and national profile of the department's public events and academic mission. Envisions and implements methods of presenting to the campus and community a highly visible and favorable image of the Department of Music. Responsible for the creation, distribution, execution, and measurement of written marketing plans. Sets goals for marketing and ticket sales and devises strategies for achieving them. Prepares regular reports on the effectiveness of these marketing plans. Establishes advertising schedules and administers placement of print, digital, online, television and radio advertising.

PUBLICITY: Handles publicity for 200 departmental events each academic year using digital and print media. Establishes and maintains a presence with social media. Uses the departmental website to promote student recitals, academic lectures, and performance events. Designs, using in-house desktop publishing, brochures, posters, and ads for concerts, lecturers, and special events. Supervises projects through all stages of printing. Writes copy for press releases, brochures, posters and newspapers/magazine ads for events.

PUBLIC RELATIONS: Plans, approves, and executes public relations strategies. Identifies target populations for audience growth. Establishes contacts with UCSB students, faculty, staff, and community groups and works with them to reach target groups. Uses social media to engage alumni and community. Plans community relations events with the Production & Events Manager.

40% Web Design and Online Presence

Envisions, develops, designs, and maintains the departments website imagery, marketing, and public/community relations aspects. Serves as departmental webmaster (Drupal) and maintains online presence through social media. Coordinates with campus communications teams and participates in campus-wide online marketing initiatives.

10% Financial Management

Oversees publicity budget with the Business Officer and Financial Assistant; tracks costs and approves publicity expenses. Secures licenses for publicity materials.

10% Miscellaneous Duties

Assists Chair with special projects and fundraising; participates in Events Review Committee; maintains electronic department events archive, brochures, calendars, press coverage, and photos; handles photographic needs and queries about archival materials.
