Responsibilities
  • Under the general direction of the Linux & Virtualization Engineering Manager, enhance and optimize the enterprise infrastructure, including storage, networks, and systems supporting digital programs, research, and related areas.
  • Provide technical expertise, architectural leadership, and knowledge of best practices; ensure critical applications are designed and optimized for appropriate availability and disaster recovery.
  • Drive scope definition, requirements analysis, functional and technical design, infrastructure as code (IaC) use, application build pipelines, product configuration, unit testing, and production deployment.
  • Ensure delivered solutions meet technical and functional/non-functional requirements; provide technical expertise in diagnosing and resolving cloud-related issues with escalation as needed.
  • Plan tactically around current and future cloud technologies; participate on campus teams to advance cloud vision and strategy across campus groups.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to UCSB Library for cloud end-to-end architecture, including AWS and future providers, networking, provisioning, security, and management.
  • Assist in developing solutions architecture and evaluate architectural alternatives for private, public, and hybrid cloud models (IaaS, PaaS, and other cloud services).
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 4-6 years of experience in architecting software solutions for a relevant technology or implementing AWS solutions.
  • 4-6 years of experience with integrating complex, diverse implementations of business functions to build scalable systems.
  • 4-6 years of experience with infrastructure as code (DevOps techniques, templating, configuration management, automated build pipelines).
  • 4-6 years of experience with Linux and containerization technologies (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker).
Preferred Qualifications
  • AWS Solutions Architect (or similar) upon hire.
  • Knowledge of cloud capabilities with hands-on experience in one or more cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Understanding of complex IT systems, full-stack environments, virtual networking, and storage.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud storage, compute, networking for academic research and libraries.
  • Experience in information technology services for research universities, particularly libraries and research collaboration.
  • Ability to understand business needs and how systems support them; self-motivated and able to work independently or in a team.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and written technical documentation skills; ability to work with diverse teams.
